Saluting a tangy classic on National Shrimp Day.

The Golden Lotus menus bring the best of Asia's culinary wisdom tailored for both the western palate as well as authentic dishes in the traditions of Canton to Niagara Falls. Designed with flare, the modern atmosphere of the Golden Lotus combined with exquisite culinary creations and an outstanding view will result in an experience that cannot. The Golden Gate’s legendary 99-cent shrimp cocktail is making a comeback at downtown’s 7th and Carson restaurant — with some caveats.

THE TANGIEST TRADITION: When asked to name some potent, memorable, and long-running Las Vegas classics, answers may vary, delightfully. Some might say neon lights, though LED has taken the lead in the illumination race in recent years. Some might say over-the-top shows, the kind with feathery headdresses and sequins and aerialists swinging from the flying trapeze, and they'd be 100% correct. No argument there: Sin City brims with shiny splash. And those looking to the food end of things might cite pricey steaks, stiff gin & tonics, and shrimp cocktails at a steal.

SHRIMPTASTIC SUPERSTAR: Of course, that last category belongs, in Las Vegas legend, to one spot and one spot alone: The Golden Gate Hotel & Casino. The historic lodge at the corner of Fremont and Main Streets has been synonymous -- if 'synonymous' is strong enough a word -- with the discounted appetizer since 1959 when Italo Ghelfi, a founder of the Golden Gate, 'introduced the popular San Francisco recipe to the casino scene.' Some long-timers might remember when the cocktail went for under a buck, then just under two, but the treat, which contains about 30 or so medium-sized shrimp, now goes for a penny under four dollars, still quite the bite-ready bargain. Will more fans show up on May 10, which happens to be National Shrimp Day, for that $3.99, cocktail sauce-laden, shellfishian favorite? Well, it also happens to be Mother's Day, so if you're doing downtown with Mom, you might want to swing through the Golden Gate and make for Du-Par's Restaurant & Bakery, where the shrimp cocktail is now served.

THE SUPPING OR THE SUNDAE GLASS? Fans of the famous Vegas appetizer have to answer this, however: Is the shrimp cocktail more famous, its low, low price, or the iconic sundae glass it is served, and always has been served in, along with some crackers and lemon? We think it all works, the glass, the deal, and the meal. Can't have one without the other, but you do have to make for the historic heart of Sin City to dig in.

Located on Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas, NV, the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino is the oldest and smallest hotel on Fremont Street. Theproperty traces its roots back to 1905 when John F. Miller opened a temporary tent hotel, the Miller Hotel. By 1906, he finished constructing a permanent hotel building, Hotel Nevada. Inside the hotel was a fully functioning casino, which continued to operate until Nevada’s statewide gambling ban in 1909.

In 1931, gambling was legal again and the hotel and casino was back up and running under the name, Sal Sagev, which is Las Vegas spelled backwards. It wasn’t until 1955 that the hotel and casino changed its name to Golden Gate and in 1974 the official name became the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino.

It wasn’t until somewhat recent years that the property was renovated. First small renovations took place in 2005 and then 2012 came major renovations. The $12 million renovations included expanding the hotel tower, adding casino floor space for additional gaming, and a high limit gaming area.

Today, the casino is owned by Derek and Greg Stevens who own and operate an investment company, Desert Rock Enterprises.

This 122-room hotel and casino is one of the more unique properties you can find downtown. Its exact location on the Fremont Street Experience is directly across from The Plaza Hotel & Casino on the Main Street side, adjacent to the Golden Nugget Las Vegas Hotel & Casino and across from Binion’s Gambling Hall on Fremont Street.

Like most Downtown Las Vegas casinos, theparking options are limited and few and far between. There is no parking structure associated with Golden Gate so you will have to find a nearby surface lot, which typically costs around $10-$15. There is also a parking structure at the nearby Golden Nugget. The hotel advertises free valet parking as well but it is not clear if you need to be a guest of the hotel or not, however, that is likely the case.

Casino at Golden Gate

[table “” not found /]
The casino floor at Golden Gate is very small and loud. It isvery much a party inside, with go-go dancers on the top of tables behind the dealers, a full bar directly next to the table games and a lot of locals who stop by just to grab a drink.

The floor has a small amount of table game options including Blackjack, Craps, Let It Ride, Three Card Poker and Ultimate Texas Hold’em. There are other notable table games missing such as Baccarat. Overall, the floor is decent and you can easily find $5 games running. It would not be our first choice to gamble at due to the loud atmosphere and mediocre dealers.

The casino is owned by the same company as The D so the player rewards program is the same for both casinos.

Blackjack at Golden Gate

One of the main games offered at Golden Gate is blackjack. You can find tables with $5 minimums, however, not all the tables are this low. The blackjack tables at Golden Gate pay 3:2, and you can also find Super 4 and Free Bet blackjack games running from time to time.

Craps at Golden Gate

Golden Gate has one of the better craps games relative to all the other Downtown Las Vegas casinos. With $5 minimums and 10x odds, craps at Golden Gate would be one of our first choices if we were to choose which table game to play on their casino floor.

Hotel at Golden Gate

The following list is the room options available at Golden Gate.

– Standard Guest Rooms
– Golden Gate Suites
– Penthouse

As we indicated earlier, the Golden Gate is a very small hotel. Thus, it is no surprise there are limited options when it comes to room choices. The basic room option is their standard guest room, which comes equipped with either one or two beds, a flat-screen TV, and basic amenities like a room safe and ironing kit. The standard rooms are pretty affordable, you can typically get a night for under $100 depending on the time of year.

The suites and penthouse rooms, on the other hand, are a bit more expensive as they range from about $150 to $700 per night. Inside the suites, you will find a bed with living room furniture and enough space to enjoy a prolonged stay. Thepenthouse rooms encompass the entire fifth floor of the hotel, and there are only two to choose from. Inside the penthouse rooms are two bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, three large TVs, and living room furniture.

The resort fee at Golden Gate is $25 per night and will enable you to access the WiFi and use the landline telephone. Check-in starts at 3pm and check-out is at 12pm.

Spa and Fitness Center at Golden Gate

One downside of the hotel at Golden Gate is that there is no spa or fitness center available. They are simply catering to guests who merely need a room.

Restaurants & Bars at Golden Gate

Another point to consider is that Golden Gate does not offer any dining options. It is safe to assume this Downtown Las Vegas casino is all about the party atmosphere and gambling that takes place on the casino floor.

And while there is no entertainment offered by the hotel inside, all you have to do is step outside to enjoy the Fremont Street Experience. Often times, there are live bands, street performers, and many other activities happening outside directly on Fremont Street.
